RESIDENT ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Resident Assistant

Department:              Residence Life

Definition:

A Resident Assistant is a para-professional staff member that provides active support for the Residence Hall Directors through assisting in residence facility operations, maintaining standards and policies, and upholding general order in residence facilities.  Resident Assistants promote academic and personal growth through educational programming and interpersonal interaction in order to facilitate high-quality campus living for resident students.

 

Qualifications:

  • GPA – 2.5 minimum
  • Good study and time-management habits
  • Strong organization, planning, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate with peers and maintain professional relationships at all organizational levels
  • Possession of moral responsibility to respect confidentiality
  • Fortitude in assertiveness with peers
  • Psychological tolerance for ambiguity and criticism
  • Ability to understand developmental behavior of the college student
  • Outgoing, creative, dedicated, dependable, people-oriented person with a willingness to be available to residents
  • Above-average listening skills
  • Show evidence of a sense of ethics, responsibility to mission and goals of student life, regard for a healthy lifestyle, and ability to initiate and maintain positive social interactions

 

Functions:

A.     Maintain good order in residence facilities

·         Assist with check-in/check-out procedures

·         Carry out duty assignments and attend staff meetings

·         Hold unit/floor meetings

·         Respond to emergency situations including those involving the evacuation of handicapped individuals

·         Implement administrative procedures in a timely, accurate and thorough manner

·         Report maintenance and repair requirements as needed

·         Keep building and room damage records when necessary – encourage student responsibility for behavior

·         Serve as a role model on and off campus in observing professional guidelines and standards, federal and state laws, residence regulations, and college policies.

 

B.     Promote academic, personal, social, cultural, and spiritual growth of students in residence units

·      Encourage good study habits and assist students in practice of productive time management

·      Develop and maintain good rapport with each student in the residence facility

·      Be available and responsive to students’ concerns, questions, and anxieties

·      Respect confidentiality

·      Provide educational programs as outlined by the Residence Life Professional Staff

·      Collaborate with Student Activities and Student Senate by supporting programs and encouraging student involvement in these areas

·      Serve as an appropriate role model to students through good study habits, concern and regard for others’ welfare, ethical behavior, positive social interaction, and self-respect and regard for a healthy lifestyle, etc.

·      Assist student in his/her development by encouraging individual and group discussion on moral, ethical values, and issues

·      Assist/refer students to utilize college and community resources, particularly when advisement and/or counseling seems necessary

 

C.     Pursue personal and professional growth through the position

·      Define a means to accomplish goals

·      Be a “team” builder and maintain supportive professional relationships

·      Promote consistency in staff procedures/policies

·      Help solve mutual problems

·      Maintain positive and open communication at all staff levels

·      Observe confidentiality

·      Attend orientation, training, and in-service programs

·      Learn campus and community resources

·      Evaluate progress in goal attainment with Professional Staff member during weekly communication and in weekly/bi-weekly meetings

 

D.    Other tasks or projects assigned by the Residence Life Professional Staff

 

Unusual Working Conditions:

  • Resident Assistants need to juggle and prioritize staff status, student status, and a private/personal life.
  • All RAs are entitled to 4 over-nights off per month.  Time off requests must be made 48 hours in advance with the Professional Residence Life Staff.

 

Supervision Exercised:

  • RAs will have supervision over resident students and guests visiting the residence facilities.

 

Accountability:

  • Resident Assistants directly report to the Residence Hall Directors and the Dean of Students.

 

Authority:

·         Authority is as delegated by the Residence Life Professional Staff, and it is circumscribed by the position of Resident Assistant.
